**Things to like

***Plenty to like

****Confident choice

1 Purse $22,500, 1 1/16 miles, 3-year-olds and up, claiming $15,000

LASTING IMPACT** raced competitively against and defeated much better last season at Oaklawn, and he is dropping into a conditioned-claimer after a troubled first start of the season. RED DRUM won two in a row at Indiana before finishing second at this price at Churchill, and he is a late threat if he can get an honest pace. NEW ORDER had a useful and slightly troubled sprint tune-up, and more importantly, he may have found a field with no opposing speed.

2 Purse $21,500, 1 mile, fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up, maiden claiming $15,000

HAPPY WILDCAT** possesses sprinter’s speed and she benefits from a race over the track and figures difficult to catch at this lower maiden classification. STAR CANYON made a nice middle-move before flattening out against better, and she will be rallying behind a potential fast pace and may only need a well-timed move. EURODREAMER is taking a slight jump in price after pressing a fast early pace in a narrow two-turn defeat.

SHESATOPATTRACTION* finished with energy in a third-place return to the races Jan. 30 at Delta, and she is the leading money earner and is dropping seven pounds. CARSONSNEWYORKGAL finished fifth in a “key” one-mile race at Fair Grounds. She needed the race following vacation time and should be working out a good trip behind a possible contentious pace. SONGANDAHEART cleared her nonwinners-of-two condition just two back at Remington, and she may be the speed of the speed.

4 Purse $25,000, 6 furlongs, 4-yearolds and up, claiming $12,500 RIGHT SQUALL*** easily ran past what is turning out to be a strong field of $10,000 rivals Jan. 24, and the nine-yearold put four consecutive victories together when sharp last season. SMARTIFIED raced well at a higher level in two starts for trainer Scott Becker at Hawthorne, and the pace should be honest enough to flatter his consistent late run. MIDNIGHT SHINE disappointed as a post-time favorite on opening day, but he failed to break alertly and was out of his typical on the lead running style.

5 Purse $27,000, 6 furlongs, 4-yearolds and up, claiming $20,000

OUIMET*** defeated $16,000 rivals by six widening lengths in his first race at Oaklawn, and the front-running gelding has the class to handle a slight jump in claiming price. CLASSY COVE was beaten less than two lengths in a $25,000 claiming race. He has put five competitive races together and should be rallying behind an honest early pace. TURN UP THE LIGHTS circled horses on the turn in a one-length defeat, and he is dropping to the claiming price of his most recent winning effort.

6 Purse $22,500, 6 furlongs, 3-yearolds and up, claiming $15,000 STARTER** has not raced since May, but he was clear winner in his 2015 debut at Oaklawn. He is clearly the class of the field and represents a stable having an excellent meeting. MR. FUZZYBOTTOM was caught up in a suicidal speed-duel when fading in his 2016 debut, and the 13-time winner likes Oaklawn and improves under a kinder pace scenario. AREED overcome a sluggish start and wide trip when defeating a nonwinners-of-two field, and he was claimed out of the race by a high percentage barn.

IVY BELL* is a first-time starter who recorded two good five-furlong gate workouts at Fair Grounds. She represents a powerful stable and drew into an ordinary field of maidens. BEACH WALK was beaten less than a length in both starts as a juvenile in Kentucky and is back at a preferred distance after tiring in a front-running route effort. TOUCH OF BLING lost a big lead inside the final furlong in a photo finish loss Jan. 18, and the front-running filly has finished second in all four of her sprint races.

SARAH SIS**** is a multiple graded stakes winner who closed 2015 with a game victory in the Grade II Raven Run at Keeneland, and she had a useful prep when beaten a neck in the six-furlong American Beauty. CALL PAT is void of speed, but the graded stakes winner possesses a consistent and strong late run and is a two-time winner at Oaklawn. STREAMLINE proved determined winning the Pippin at 15-1 odds, and the winner of three consecutive is lightly raced and eligible to show more.

9 Purse $25,000, 6 furlongs, 3-yearolds and up which have never won two races, Arkansas-bred, claiming $25,000

MEANBONE** raced evenly in his return from a break at Churchill, but he has done his best running at Oaklawn and drops into a race restricted to statebreds. OUR DOC TANNER showed speed in consecutive third-place finishes at Remington and Louisiana Downs. He has competitive Beyer figures and appears to be working smartly since arriving in Hot Springs. TIPSY SUSPECT set a moderate pace and maintained a clear lead to the wire in a nice maiden victory, and notice the fourth-place finisher (Racer) came back to post a clear victory.

Exotic possibilities

The 50-cent Pick-4 starting in Race 2 is enticing with the first leg being a three-horse race, and the second leg is likely to produce a minor upset. Race 4 is a “single” for me but a case can be made for a few, and the final leg is another with multiple contenders. Race 6 brings a large field of 11 to the post and again the strategy of putting a likely winner on top and putting price horses in the middle is a good strategy for trifecta players.
