Former Rogers school superintendent Roland Smith dies

Educator also served in Greenland, Pea Ridge

Those who knew and worked with Roland Smith spoke of him as a leader and a man with commitment, passion and dedication for his profession.

Smith, 78, died Wednesday at Circle of Life Hospice Home at Legacy Village in Bentonville, according to his obituary.

Smith worked in education in Illinois before he retired and moved to Arkansas. He was superintendent of the Rogers School District from 1993 to 1999 before retiring again. He also served as a superintendent for the Greenland School District and as interim superintendent for Pea Ridge School District.

He helped found the College of Education at the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith. He also taught classes at the University of North Colorado and the University of Arkansas.

Janie Darr, superintendent for the Rogers School District, said she worked as assistant superintendent and then deputy superintendent under Smith. Darr became superintendent in 1999. Darr called Smith a wonderful mentor who helped her improve her leadership abilities. She said he was kind, compassionate and caring.

Smith offered his help multiple times after he left the Rogers School District, but he never interfered, Darr said.

"I just have the fondest memories for when we worked together," she said.

The two kept in touch by phone and by meeting once a month, she said. Their discussions mostly revolved around education.

Charles Cudney, superintendent for the Greenland School District from 2010 to 2014, said Smith was a friend. Smith was superintendent of the district from 2008 to 2010. The two men were both appointed by the Arkansas Board of Education and worked together through the transition.

Smith held a high standard of character for himself and those around him, Cudney said. He also enjoyed serving as a mentor and liked to help other educators be successful.

Cudney also spoke of Smith's commitment, passion and dedication to his profession. Smith still met with educators after he left the superintendent position with Pea Ridge School District. Cudney said he could go to Smith and bounce ideas off him. Smith would then give him suggestions.

Rick Neal, superintendent for Pea Ridge School District, said he was principal at Pea Ridge High School when Smith was interim superintendent for the district during the 2011-2012 school year. Neal took the superintendent position after that.

Neal said he considers Smith a close friend. They worked together and went to church together.

"He's been an integral part of my life," he said.

Neal called Smith an outstanding leader who loved leadership books.

Roland is survived by his wife, two sons, two daughters and five grandchildren, according to his obituary.
