Man charged with attempted rape in Springfield, Mo. attack

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. —A Springfield man has been charged with assaulting a woman on the Missouri State University campus and is a suspect in two other sexual assaults.

The Springfield News-Leader reports that 52-year-old Stephen Goodwin is jailed on $100,000 bond in Greene County on kidnapping and attempted rape charges. No attorney is listed for him in online court records.

Police say he came up behind a Missouri State student when she was walking home Wednesday, pulled her to the ground and tried to rape her before a bystander intervened. The bystander and the victim followed Goodwin until police arrived.

Goodwin told police he was walking around campus and isn't sure what happened because he has "blackouts."

A bond recommendation document says Goodwin is a suspect in two other sexual assaults.
