Cabot athlete Jarrod Barnes became the first in-state junior prospect to receive a scholarship offer from Arkansas on Thursday.

He called Coach Bret Bielema and had a hard time believing the Hogs were extending an offer.

"When he first said he was going to offer me, I was confused," Barnes said. "I didn't know what was going on, and he said it again. I just looked up to my friends and said 'I just got a scholarship,' and I started freaking out."

Barnes, 5-11, 173, 4.52 seconds in the 40-yard dash, also is drawing interest from Auburn, Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas State.

He played quarterback for the Panthers and rushed 111 times for 1,090 yards and 17 touchdowns this past season. He also completed 15 of 44 passes for 223 yards and 2 touchdowns. He could play slot receiver or defensive back on the next level.

Barnes grew up rooting for the Razorbacks.

"It means a lot," Barnes said. "I've always liked them, and my family has always liked them."

He said he was tempted to commit on the spot but held back. He has no timeline for a decision.
