Williams, Robinson lift Maumelle to victory

MAUMELLE 95, VILONIA 90, OT

Vilonia Eagles senior guard Austin Newell had just hit an improbable three-pointer to force overtime, but the Maumelle Hornets prevailed and pulled away behind senior guard Shawn Williams and junior guard Tremont Robinson to a 95-90 victory in one overtime at Hornet Gymnasium on Tuesday night.

Williams hit a total of eight three-pointers and led Maumelle (17-4, 7-2 5A-West) with 42 points. Robinson scored 24, but despite the output of its backcourt stars, Maumelle never led until Robinson's three-point play put the Hornets up, 70-69, with 3:31 left in the fourth quarter.

At times, Vilonia (11-10, 3-6) seemed in control. It took a 59-46 lead on a three-pointer by senior guard Josh Greer with 1:52 left in the third quarter, but Williams began the fourth quarter with three-pointers on three consecutive possessions. His final of that particular run cut Vilonia's lead to 63-62 with 6:52 left in the fourth.

"Williams was on tonight," Maumelle Coach Michael Shook said. "I'm a big proponent of team ball, but there late I just said, 'Tremont, you attack the basket when you have it, and Shawn, if you can create a shot, shoot it. You other guys, just rebound.' ''

"Give credit to Maumelle," Vilonia Coach Tim Goers said. "We had an opportunity to win this game, and we didn't take care of business. We didn't get back and play defense, and when that's what happens, you lose."

After Robinson gave Maumelle its first lead, there were four lead changes.

A free throw by junior guard John Word gave Maumelle an 80-75 lead with 33.1 seconds left in regulation.

Two free throws by Newell and another by senior guard Jacob Berry put Vilonia within 80-78, but Robinson hit one of two from the free-throw line with 15.9 seconds to put Maumelle up, 81-78.

It wasn't enough to prevent overtime after Newell took a cross-court inbound pass from Greer and hit a fall-away three-pointer from 22 feet that rattled through the rim with five seconds left.

Newell led Vilonia with 30 points.

Williams began overtime with a three-pointer and after three possessions, Maumelle led 87-81 with 1:41 left.

Vilonia was within 91-88 after senior center Charlie Thomas' free throw with 30.5 seconds left, but Williams hit four consecutive free throws on Maumelle's next two possessions.
