Corps has openings for park attendants at Beaver Lake

The Army Corps of Engineers has two park attendant positions open at Beaver Lake.

One is at Dam Site River park below Beaver Dam. Another is at Prairie Creek park east of Rogers. Park attendants live in their own camping trailer or motor home at the park. The corps provides a free campsite with full utility hook-ups, said Michael Hurley, chief ranger at Beaver Lake.

Applicants bid on the positions, listing how much they want per day to work at the park. Park attendants must be two-person teams, Hurley said. Most are retired couples.

"Most bids come in at around $70 to $90 per day," Hurley said. Bid prices depend on the duties.

The Dam Site River position requires park attendants to staff the fee both, collect camp fees at the booth, take telephone calls and answer questions from campers. There is no cleaning involved.

The Prairie Creek position requires park attendants to clean the restrooms and other facilities at the park and to staff the fee booth on weekends. Park attendants must provide their own cleaning supplies and toilet paper for the restrooms.

The jobs are six days a week during the peak visitor season, Hurley said.

"We want them to enjoy the lake like they're camping. We encourage their families to visit them," Hurley said. Pets are OK.

Orientation by the corps is in mid-March. Both parks open for camping on April 1. Work at Prairie Creek ends on Sept. 30. Work at Dam Site River ends on Oct. 31.

The Beaver Lake ranger staff assists the park attendants as needed.

Those interested should contact Brian Walch at the corps' Beaver Lake office in Rogers, 479-531-1562.
