Mexican offshore oil-rig blaze kills 2

MEXICO CITY -- Mexico's state oil company said a fire that broke out on an oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico killed two workers and injured eight.

Petroleos Mexico said via Twitter that the fire on the Abkatun A platform off the coast of the southern state of Campeche was brought under control Sunday morning and the installation was never abandoned.

It said one Pemex employee and a worker for a contractor died in the blaze. Six of the injured were hospitalized and two were treated and released.

Pemex said the fire began in an area of compression equipment but has not given any information on the cause.
