4A-2 GIRLS

Riverview takes title using full-speed run

RIVERVIEW 59, ESTEM 46

Riverview Coach Ryan Smith said his team only knows one way to play -- full speed.

Senior guard Kayla Young finished with a game-high 18 points as the unbeaten Lady Raiders topped eStem's Lady Mets 59-46 on Tuesday night at the Nutt Complex on the campus of the Arkansas School for the Deaf to secure the 4A-2 Conference title.

"We can't play slow," Smith said. "Even when we try to milk the clock. We throw it away when we try to slow it down."

Riverview (26-0, 13-0) did not throw it away much on Tuesday, committing only three turnovers while fighting back from as much as an eight-point deficit in the first half.

The Lady Mets (22-6, 9-3) scored the first basket of the second half on a layup from Jaylen Mallard to take a 25-24 lead, but Riverview scored the next 10 points and 17 of the next 20. Young and 5-9 senior Madison Riley led the charge, scoring all but two of the Lady Raiders' points during the first seven minutes of the third quarter.

Riley finished with 15 points. Erykah Johns, a 5-8 senior, added 16 points to the Lady Raiders' total. Kira Cartwright, a 5-9 junior, added nine points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

"That's one good thing about us; we've got such good balance," Smith said. "They spent the first half face-guarding Erykah and somebody else stepped up. That's what we've been doing."

Senior guard Gia Hayes led eStem with 13 points, nine of which came in the second half. Sophomore Mariah Adams and 6-0 freshman Jaylen Mallard added 10 points each. Adams led the Lady Mets in rebounding with 11.

Riverview led 43-32 after three quarters and eStem drew to as close as six points twice in the final quarter, the last coming when Hayes hit a 12-footer with 4:04 to play.

The Lady Mets had a chance to draw within three, but a missed three-pointer allowed Riverview to get an easy transition bucket and started a 12-5 Lady Raiders' rally to end the game.
