LR woman pleads innocent in killing

A Little Rock woman pleaded innocent to a charge of capital murder Monday in a robbery attempt that left one person dead in December.

District Judge Alice Lightle ordered Nautica Champeal Finney, 19, to be held without bail at the Pulaski County jail.

Finney surrendered to police Sunday in the death of Feron Shadell Whitley, 22. She and Brandon Montel Nevels, 21, both face capital murder charges in the case.

Police found Whitley shot to death Dec. 16 at Autumn Park Apartments at 43 Warren Drive in Little Rock. Finney is accused of luring Whitley to the apartment complex with the promise of oral sex.

She and Nevels planned to rob Whitley of money and drugs, according to a court affidavit. But Whitley reached for a pistol during the holdup, and Nevels shot him dead, police said.

Nevels had been on parole at the time. He pleaded innocent in the case last week.

Finney appeared in court Monday through video from the Pulaski County jail. She did not speak during the hearing. Prosecutors said she had no adult criminal record, but had been charged with two counts of second-degree battery as a minor in Sebastian County.

Finney's next court date was set for March 30.
