Some businesses open today to feed hungry

HOT SPRINGS -- Some Arkansas businesses and individuals are volunteering their time and resources to feed hungry Hot Springs residents today.

Doyle Spradlin, owner of Hawg's Pizza, said the restaurant at 1442 Airport Road will open its doors to anyone who is hungry for free food from 1-4 p.m. today or "until every one gets full."

"God has moved me to do this," he said.

Spradlin said others have volunteered to help Hawg's and provide resources. Several individuals have donated turkeys, he said, so different types of food will be available for those who cannot eat pizza.

Fat Bottomed Girls Cupcake Shoppe is donating cupcakes for dessert, and one of Hawg's suppliers, Tankersley Food Service of Van Buren, is donating some of the food.

Spradlin said several of his employees and friends are volunteering to help serve the food. Hawg's is also offering to pick up and take home anyone who cannot drive but wishes to go to the restaurant to eat, and will deliver meals to those who are homebound.

"I am blessed and fortunate to be able to do this," he said.

Spradlin said one thing he and others can do for Christmas is make sure anyone who is hungry gets fed today. He hopes to feed 300-400 people.

"This is what the staff at Hawg's Pizza wanted for Christmas this year," he said.

Another Hot Springs business, Steadman's Physical Therapy, is taking steps to make sure emergency services providers do not go hungry on Christmas.

Owner Valerie Steadman said her business will feed any law enforcement officer or emergency medical service member who works today.

She said it is her way of giving back to those who sacrifice their holiday time with their families to keep others safe.

Steadman's Physical Therapy, at 321 Section Line Road, Suite E, next to the U.S. Post Office, will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., she said.

Smokin' In Style BBQ is donating the food, she said, and employees and friends will volunteer their time to serve the emergency personnel. Steadman said she is making desserts.
