Rogers High holds off Greenwood

ROGERS -- Rogers High got scoring contributions from several different sources Tuesday night to claim a 64-57 win over Greenwood at King Arena.

The Mounties built a 15-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, but held off a furious rally to even their record at 5-5 heading into the holiday break.

Greenwood (3-7) held Rogers to just one field goal more than six minutes of the fourth quarter, but senior Jake Benninghoff broke that drought by converting a three-point play to give the Mounties a 61-55 advantage with one minute, 27 seconds left.

Benninghoff led three Rogers with 15 points, while Garrett Dake added 13 and Tony Casey 11. Sophomore R.J. Roberson chipped in nine.

Rogers coach Wayne Herren was pleased with how his team made enough plays in the final minutes to secure the win, especially being without junior Ryan Donovan, who is sidelined with an injury.

"We've got to make some more free throws there at the end," Herren said. "But being a guard down with Ryan out, I thought some guys stepped up today and did some good things.

"We had some shaky times, but Greenwood brought a lot of pressure on us. That's been something earlier in the year like against Webb City we didn't handle it very well. I'm very proud of the way the guys handled it tonight and were able to come out with a win."

The Mounties made just 18 of 31 free throws for the game, including 10 of 19 in the fourth quarter. But Dake, a 6-4 junior, hit four straight to push Rogers' lead back to eight with 2:09 left.

Herren praised Dake's work overall, which was key in the win.

"I've been saying all year, Garrett's that guy who can turn a game for us," Herren said. "He does a lot of good things for us. He had a huge rebound put-back on a missed free throw, made free throws."

Rogers got off to a solid start and led 28-21 at halftime, then used a 10-3 surge to start the second half to seemingly take control. However, Greenwood charged back behind the play of junior Jordan Sheppard, who finished with a game-high 23 points.

The Lady Bulldogs limited Rogers to just three field goals in the second half and made all 10 of their free throws in the fourth quarter to rally from a nine-point halftime deficit.

Greenwood (6-5) made eight straight free throws in the final 35.7 seconds, after Rogers pulled within 40-38 on Madison Loyd's sixth 3-pointer of the night. The Lady Bulldogs started the second half with an 11-0 run to take a one-point lead, but Loyd's 3-pointer at the third-quarter buzzer gave Rogers a 28-27 lead.

Rogers (6-4) was playing without leading scorer Elise Randels, who suffered a dislocated left thumb late last week. She will be out 3-6 weeks. Loyd was the Lady Mounties' lone player in double figures with a game-high 18. Madison Sandor had a team-high nine rebounds.

Sophomore Kyiah Julian led Greenwood with 17 points, while Susannah Stein added nine. The Lady Bulldogs finished 16 of 19 from the free-throw line for the game.
