GREENLAND -- Alan Barton had to turn to his reserves Tuesday night, and Fiona Wilson answered the call.

The Greenland sophomore scored 11 of her 19 points in the second quarter and helped the Lady Pirates pull ahead of Elkins for a 52-44 victory during 3A/4A District 1 basketball action in Pee Dee Gymnasium.

"That's what we're used to," Barton said. "The next girl is up, sort to say. Sapphire (Osburn) got into foul trouble, and Ashlen Rogers wasn't playing that good. I think that's where we are consistent at. The girls are ready for their next moment.

"Fiona had a great junior-high year last year and played against four or five players at a time because she was our junior high. Last year made her a whole lot better for this year."

Wilson and junior teammate Hayleigh Pickett came off the bench and combined to score 19 of Greenland's 21 points in the second quarter as the Lady Pirates (8-3) turned a 12-8 deficit into a 29-22 halftime lead. Pickett's back-to-back 3-pointers put Greenland ahead to stay, and Wilson's bucket with 26 seconds before halftime made it 29-20 before Elkins (5-4) cut it to seven with a Jessica Boaz bucket.

Greenland took its biggest lead when McKayla Redmond's 3-pointer made it 34-22 with 5 minutes, 17 seconds remaining in the third quarter, only to have Elkins go on a 10-2 run and cut it to 36-32 less than three minutes later. The Lady Elks were able to get that close one more time -- 48-44 on a Boaz 3-pointer with 21 seconds remaining -- but Greenland closed the game with two free throws by Redmond and a layup by Ashlen Rogers just before the buzzer sounded.

"Their sophomore came in and made a huge difference for them," Elkins coach Monica Wells said. "We didn't have an answer early and let her get on a run.

"We gave up too many possessions of the ball. We didn't block out like we need to and didn't execute down the stretch. The good part is we have chances to practice and get better over the break."

Redmond added 16 points for Greenland, while Boaz was the only Elkins player in double figures with 18. Both teams return to action next Wednesday in the Airedale Classic in Alma, with Greenland taking on Lavaca at 3:30 p.m. and Elkins playing Alma at 6:30 p.m.

Chad Graham scored nine of his 12 points in the fourth quarter and fueled Elkins' comeback as the Elks rallied from a 30-18 halftime deficit to upend Greenland.

Karsten Shackleford's 3-pointer with 3:55 remaining tied the game at 43, then Graham hit back-to-back buckets to put Elkins (4-3) ahead for good.

Shackleford added 11 points for the Elks, while Zac Wolfe had 17 and Boone Tincher 10 for Greenland (2-6).
