Girls Basketball: West Fork girls respond to Gentry push

WEST FORK -- Defense did the job for West Fork's girls in the first half.

Then came the three-point barrage and plenty of offense for the Lady Tigers in the second half, as West Fork remained perfect on the season with a 50-37 win Friday over Gentry in the Tiger Dome.

Gentry (4-4, 3-3): Folker 10, Faulkenberry 9, Kilgore 8, Hammond 7, Linton 5, Cripps 4, Thao 3, Vang 3, Martin 2.

"We talked at half, we knew (Gentry) was going to make a run," West Fork coach Rodney Selph said. "Brooke (Tedford) hit a couple of three's back-to-back that were big that got our lead back up when they were making a push.

"Gentry's a good team. They're big and their bigs are athletic."

West Fork (10-0, 3-0 3A/4A District 1) led 29-14 at half behind a defense which limited the Lady Pioneers to two first-half field goals -- both 3-pointers -- while Gentry instead relied on an 8-for-9 effort from the free-throw line before intermission.

"They went to that zone defense and we didn't attack it," Gentry coach Toby Tebevaugh said. "Then we'd make a run at them in the second half, but every time we did to their credit they had an answer. And every time we did seem to get a stop, we'd have a bad play or a turnover.

"I know we have just one senior and we're a young team, but at some point you have to make those plays."

Shannon Throgmorton and Tedford led the Lady Tigers with 12 points each, combining for five of the team's seven 3-pointers.

"We can shoot it pretty good. We hit 13 3s the other night," Selph said. "We're better when we have Holly (Griffin) in there inside and that's why we stayed in that zone defense to keep her in there tonight when she was in foul trouble."

Haley Hays led Gentry (7-4, 2-4) with 12 points.

West Fork is at Gravette on Tuesday. Gentry faces Tulsa Holland Hall in the Siloam Springs Tournament on Dec. 28.

Boys: West Fork 75, Gentry 51

Dalton Hays and Jeff Treat combined for 42 points as the Tigers built a 15-point first-quarter lead and pulled away from Gentry with another big scoring spree to close out the contest down the stretch.

The Pioneers closed to within eight points at intermission, but West Fork took control for good in the second half holding the Pioneers to six field goals combined in the third and fourth quarters.

Hays scored 24 points and Treat 18 to pace West Fork. Evan Folker led Gentry with 10.
