Basketball: Freshman, free throws lift Gravette past Prairie Grove

PRAIRIE GROVE -- A team that makes only three field goals in one half is usually in trouble, but Gravette found other ways to win.

The Lady Lions did so mostly with free throws and the shooting of freshman Cally Kildow.

Kildow scored 20 points to lead Gravette to a 44-37 victory over Prairie Grove in 3A/4A District 1 play at the Tiger Arena.

Gravette led 17-16 at halftime after making 10 of 12 free throws. The Lady Lions then pulled away behind Kildow, who made five of her six 3-pointers in the second half.

"She's a real good athlete, a big-time softball player," Gravette coach Will Pittman said. "She's got a smooth shot, and she was huge for us tonight."

Gravette (3-4, 2-1) was also huge at the free-throw line, where the Lady Lions made 17-of-23. Prairie Grove (3-3, 2-2) finished 6-of-12.

Prairie Grove cut a 12-point deficit to six points in the fourth quarter after a driving layup by Camree Bartholomew, who finished with 16 points. But Kildow, who opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer, struck again from the top of the key to put the Lady Lions ahead 41-32.

Kildow often got in position to score because of the ball-handling of guard Tori Foster, who added 11 points and broke down the Prairie Grove defense with her ability to dribble, including behind the back.

"Tori's our point guard, and she's definitely the heart and soul of our team," Pittman said. "We go how she goes, and I also thought she did a great job on the defensive end."

Sophomore Emily Grant added nine points for Prairie Grove, which got into foul trouble in part because the Lady Tigers were smaller at every position than Gravette.

"We'd have to press more and make the game a lot faster," Prairie Grove coach Kevin Froud said in trying to reduce the free-throw differential. "But I don't know if we can do that right now, stamina-wise, for the whole game. You have to pick your spots to do that sort of stuff."

Gravette used balanced scoring to earn a road win at Prairie Grove.

Kelton Trembley led the Lions with 13 points while Dayten Wishon and Andrew Miller added 10 apiece. Gravette (5-1, 3-0) made eight of 10 free throws in the second half to keep the lead.

Cameron Simmons finished with 12 points to lead Prairie Grove (3-5, 3-1).
