Business news in brief

Northwest Medical wound center open

Northwest Medical Center, Bentonville has opened a Wound and Hyperbaric Center, an outpatient facility offering a comprehensive approach for patients with chronic-wound issues. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The center's patients are examined by a multidisciplinary staff trained in wound care and evaluated for physical conditions, such as diabetes, that could interfere with proper healing.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is especially beneficial for diabetic patients with nonhealing ulcers, and those with arterial ulcers and other types of wounds that fail to respond to conservative therapy. The therapy is also a treatment for conditions without open wounds, such as radionecrosis and osteoradionecrosis, osteomyelitis and idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

26 hospitals awarded state bonuses

Arkansas Medicaid awarded more than $4.5 million in performance bonus payments to 26 Arkansas hospitals as part of the annual Inpatient Quality Incentive program. Hospitals were recognized at an awards ceremony during the annual Arkansas Medicaid Educational Conference luncheon held Wednesday in Little Rock.

Arkansas Medicaid, the Arkansas Hospital Association and Arkansas Foundation for Medical Care worked together to develop the program, which was started in 2007. Arkansas Medicaid has awarded nearly $40 million to hospitals since the program began.

Area hospitals receiving the bonus payments are: Mercy Hospital Northwest Arkansas, Northwest Health System, Siloam Springs Regional Hospital, Washington Regional Medical Center, Johnson Regional Medical Center, North Arkansas Regional Medical Center, Sparks Health System and Sparks Medical Center, Van Buren.

Nationally standardized quality measures are selected by the program's advisory committee. Hospitals participating in the Inpatient Quality Incentive program are required to collect and submit data, which is independently verified. Hospitals must meet specific quality goals for at least 80 percent of eligible measures in order to receive bonus payments.
