ASU System chief gets raise

JONESBORO -- Arkansas State University System President Chuck Welch received a $10,000 annual raise and the board of trustees extended his contract through June 30, 2021.

Welch will now receive a yearly salary of $350,000 in public money, ASU System spokesman Jeff Hankins said. He will be the second-highest-paid university president in the state.

Trustees met Thursday at ASU-Beebe.

Welch, 43, was hired as the ASU System president Nov. 9, 2010. He had been the president of Henderson State University for two years before taking over the ASU System.

Hankins said the five ASU System trustees voted unanimously to give Welch a 3 percent raise and to extend his contract a year. He said trustees will begin working on a new five-year contract for Welch.

University of Arkansas System President Donald Bobbitt, hired Nov. 1, 2011, earns $500,000 of public money and is the highest-paid university president in the state, said Nate Hinkel, a UA System spokesman.

Arkansas Tech University President Robin Bowen earns $275,000 a year, and outgoing University of Central Arkansas President Tom Courtway is paid $242,400 a year. Houston Davis, who will replace Courtway as UCA's president, will be paid $347,330.
