Kat shares dishes for chilly weather

Recipes that appear in Idea Alley have not been tested by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

Jean Brown shares several seasonal recipes this week.

"I've been making this holiday side dish since 1968," Brown writes.

Cranberry Relish

1 pound fresh cranberries

2 oranges, peel and seeds removed

2 red apples, peel and core removed

2 cups sugar

2 (small) packages orange gelatin

Grind cranberries, oranges and apples in a food grinder. Add the sugar.

Prepare the gelatin according to package directions. When it starts to set, fold in the fruit mixture. Use container of your choice and allow to congeal.

This cider was served at the Territorial Restoration open house in December 1979, Brown notes.

Old English Hot Spiced Cider

2 quarts unsweetened cider

1 teaspoon whole allspice

2 (2-inch) cinnamon sticks

12 whole cloves

2/3 cup brown sugar

Grated nutmeg

Add cider to a percolator coffee pot. Place spices in the basket of the percolator coffee pot. Perk and serve hot.

These cookies are reminiscent of fruitcake.

Fruit Cookies

1 cup brown sugar

2/3 cup butter

2 eggs

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon vinegar

2 cups flour

1 teaspoon ground cloves

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Pinch salt

1 1/2 cups chopped pecans

1 to 2 pounds candied fruit

Heat oven to 350 degrees.

Cream sugar and butter. Add eggs and mix well. Dissolve baking soda in vinegar and add to the egg mixture.

In a separate bowl, combine flour, spices and salt. Add to egg mixture. Stir in nuts and fruit.

Drop by spoonfuls onto a greased cookie sheet. Bake 12 minutes.

REQUESTS

• Creme de Mint dessert and house vinaigrette like those served at the closed Victorian Garden restaurant in North Little Rock for Darby Beranek.

• Turkey salad from Honey Baked Ham for Grace Honeycutt. "I love the turkey salad from Honey Baked Ham because it isn't drowning in mayonnaise. Does anyone have any turkey (or chicken) salad recipes with little to no mayo?" Honeycutt asks.
