Winslow man injured in explosion released from hospital

A Winslow man injured when his trailer exploded was released Sunday from the hospital, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

Gary Mills, 52, suffered second-degree burns to his head, face and hands Thursday after he lit a match in the trailer, igniting propane leaking into the home, said Tyler McCartney, assistant fire marshal for the Sheriff's Office.

The explosion happened about 2 a.m. in 600 block of Main Street, McCartney said. Mills, who first was found by a neighbor, was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Springfield, Mo., McCartney said.

The owner of the property told investigators a propane tank was hooked up to the man's RV the previous day, McCartney said. The propane likely leaked into the trailer for more than 12 hours, McCartney said.

The explosion was large, with the debris field spreading 200 feet, McCartney said. The blast blew the walls off the trailer, leaving nothing standing but the frame, he added.
