ASU shoots well, wins 7th in a row

Another good shooting night led to another victory for the Arkansas State men's basketball team.

Tamas Bruce scored 16 points and Deven Simms had 15, both coming off the bench, and ASU beat Cleveland State 78-51 on Wednesday night at the Convocation Center in Jonesboro.

The Red Wolves (7-1), who have won seven in a row and are off to their best start since 2003, shot 51.9 percent from the floor, including 60.7 percent in the second half.

Bruce and Simms scored all of their points inside or from the free-throw line. Donte Thomas added 13 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists, while Rashad Lindsey and C.J. Foster each had 8 points apiece. Devin Carter scored 7 points, making 2 of 8 shots while scoring his lowest total since a Nov. 14 victory over Central Baptist, but his teammates made up for it Wednesday.

It was the fourth game in a row that ASU had shot over 50 percent from the floor and the sixth time in eight games this season. The Red Wolves, who shot 41.5 percent from the floor last season, are shooting 50.9 so far, 13th best nationally.

They held the Vikings (1-5) to 39.1 percent shooting and forced 23 turnovers.

ASU used a 10-0 run in the first half to take a 16-6 lead that it never gave up. It outscored Cleveland State 26-8 over the final 13 minutes of the first half to go up 32-17 at halftime. The Red Wolves pushed their lead to 29 points five times in the second half before winning by 27 points, their second largest margin of the season.
