FAYETTEVILLE -- Almost one-half of the men and a somewhat smaller percent of the women enrolled in the University of Arkansas are supporting themselves in whole or in part. The university has a student labor fund appropriated by the legislature, and students are employed to do all university work which can be done by them efficiently. More than 150 boys and girls participated in this fund last year, performing such services as janitor work, cleaning the campus, repair work, stenography and typewriting, assistants in laboratories, etc.

• The Little Rock School Board accepted a bid of $24,216 Monday from the Bureau of Educational Research of the University of Oregon to make a study of desegregation in the Little Rock School District. The vote to accept the Oregon bid was 5 to 0, with Warren K. Bass abstaining. Bass said he favored a more comprehensive study and that he felt the Board was going "about one fourth" as far as it should.

• If Gov. Bill Clinton left it up to his supporters in Northwest Arkansas to decide, he'd take a stab at the Democratic presidential nomination. Earlier this week, the governor announced he would take a private tour of the state to ask Arkansans if he should break a 1990 gubernatorial campaign promise and run for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1992. He began his travels Wednesday in such towns as Conway and Russellville.

• The utilities responsible for treating sewage in Little Rock and North Little Rock wouldn't benefit financially or otherwise from a merger, at least not now, according to a study presented Tuesday by the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. The Little Rock Wastewater Utility and the North Little Rock Wastewater Utility should, however, consider cooperating more formally by discussing coming work and possibly sharing the costs of tests of treated wastewater. "There is no physical or legal connection between the two wastewater utilities that causes any problem, or that would be resolved if the two wastewater utilities were to merge," the report said. The cities and their utilities asked for the study in July 2004.
