Man gets nearly 39 years for attempted murder of TV anchor

SAN DIEGO — A judge has sentenced a house painter to nearly 39 years in prison for shooting a TV sports anchor in San Diego.

Superior Court Judge Michael Smyth said Wednesday that 55-year-old Mike Montana continues to be a danger to society.

A jury convicted Montana in July of premeditated attempted murder for the shooting of Kyle Kraska.

The on-air anchor for CBS News 8 testified that he gave Montana an $800 advance to paint his home in 2014 and refused to pay the rest because Montana never finished the job.

Kraska was shot four times in his driveway.

Montana's lawyer argued his client never meant to kill Kraska.

Montana also was convicted of making criminal threats against two people unrelated to the shooting.
