I-49 construction to shut some lanes

Construction on Interstate 49 in Johnson and Springdale will require another series of lane closures for five days beginning today, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said.

Crews will be placing pavement markings and shoulder rumble strips on the inside and outside lanes on northbound and southbound lanes of I-49 north from U.S. 71B in Johnson to U.S. 412/Sunset Avenue in Springdale.

The inside and outside lanes of I-49 will be closed alternately overnight through Friday, weather permitting, the department said.

The northbound lanes will be closed between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. while the southbound lanes will be closed from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. Traffic will be controlled using signs and barrels, the department said.

The work is part of a $28.3 million project to widen that section of I-49 to six lanes. The project is expected to be complete late this year.
