Police officer quits while under probe

JONESBORO -- A Jonesboro police officer under a criminal investigation by the department resigned after serving on the force for a year, Jonesboro Police Department spokesman Paul Holmes said.

Adam Shipman tendered his resignation Aug. 11, two days after Chief Rick Elliott informed him that he was under a criminal investigation.

Holmes did not say what the investigation was about.

Elliott said Shipman was being investigated in "a criminal matter" but did not elaborate.

Shipman was hired by the police department as a patrolman Aug. 3, 2015, after graduating in November 2014 from the Arkansas Law Enforcement Training Academy at Black River Technical College in Pocahontas.

Holmes said Shipman was ordered to turn in his computer and cellphone but did not specify why.

Shipman is the son of John Shipman, a Jonesboro police officer who served on the DARE program and in special policing in the past and is now a Republican candidate for Craighead County sheriff.
