Rogers teen charged as adult in shooting

BENTONVILLE -- Prosecutors charged a Rogers teen as an adult in connection with the weekend shooting of a man.

Juan Steven Amador-Labarre, 17, is charged with battery in the first degree, a felony; and four counts of aggravated assault, a felony. He was arrested Sunday

He faces from five to 20 years in prison if convicted on the battery charge. He could be sentenced to up to six years in prison on each of the aggravated assault counts.

Amador-Labarre was being held in the Benton County Juvenile Detention Center on a $250,000 bond Wednesday. Individuals younger than 18 may be charged as an adult, but are held in the juvenile facility until their 18th birthday and then transferred to the jail.

Rogers police were called to a shooting Saturday at 806 1/2 N. Sixth St. A man, who police identified as Dakota Edwards, had a bullet wound to his left arm and chest area and was taken to Northwest Medical Center-Bentonville, according to the probable cause affidavit.

Carlos Estrada, who lives at 806 N. Sixth St., told police he heard yelling and two shots, and then saw a man running down the street.

Juan Estrada, who also lives at 806 N. Sixth St., told police he saw Edwards and Amador-Labarre arguing in the driveway. Juan Estrada said a Jeep pulled into the driveway and three or four males got out of the vehicle and began to walk toward Edwards and Amador-Labarre.

Juan Estrada said he heard Amador-Labarre tell the males to get back, and he pulled out a small handgun and shot Edwards, according to the affidavit.

Edwards suffered a bullet wound to the left arm. The bullet went through his arm and lodged in his chest area.

Edwards was treated at the hospital and released. Doctors left the bullet in the chest because they believed it would do more damage to remove it, according to the affidavit.

Witnesses told police they heard Amador-Labarre and another man argue about marijuana and money.

One witness told police Amador-Labarre was randomly shooting, not aiming at anyone, and Edwards got in the way.

Edwards identified Amador-Labarre as the person who shot him, according to court documents.

Amador-Labarre declined to comment when questioned by police.

Amador-Labarre's arraignment is scheduled for 8 a.m. Sept. 26 in Benton County Circuit Judge Brad Karren's courtroom.
