Mike Malone, director of the Northwest Arkansas Council since 2006, is going to work directly for Steuart and Tom Walton to coordinate quality-of-life initiatives in the region, according to a news release from the nonprofit organization.

The council will begin a search for the third director in its 26-year existence, the news release stated.

“Everyone knows how much I’ve enjoyed my work at the Northwest Arkansas Council over the past decade,” Malone said in the news release. “I will miss it, but I’m very excited about taking on new challenges that further advance Northwest Arkansas as one of the best places to live and work."

The council has been involved in local projects such as the development of the Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport, the Benton-Washington Regional Public Water Authority and funding for Interstate 49 between Fayetteville and Fort Smith.
