A man with a gun stopped a Jacksonville man from choking and punching a woman Saturday night, according to a police report.

About 11 p.m., Derick Ladell Madden started ringing the doorbell and kicking the door of his ex-girlfriend, Tiara Smith, in the 1000 block of Stevenson Cove, according to the report.

When Smith opened the door, Madden confronted her about her "guy friend" Demarcus Henry, grabbed Smith's throat and shoved her, according to the report.

Madden then confronted Henry, who was standing in the driveway, before turning back and punching Smith in the back of her head, according to the report.

When Henry saw Madden assaulting Smith, he pointed a handgun at Madden and told him to stop, which he did, according to the report.

Police arrived at the scene to find Madden "very agitated," and an officer had to order him back several times as he tried to approach Henry, according to the report. Police didn't see any injuries around Smith's neck, and her hairstyle made it difficult to feel any knots on her head, the report said.

Henry corroborated Smith's account.

Madden was arrested about midnight on a misdemeanor charge of third-degree assault on a family or household member.
