Hot Pepper 5K, 10K to light up Jonesboro

In summer, your smarter runners race early in the morning or after the sun goes down. The third annual Hot Pepper Nights 5K and 10K begin at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Bernards Medical Center Auditorium, 505 E. Washington Ave. in Jonesboro.

Registration includes the post-race party; food and festivities begin at 7 p.m. at the auditorium. The 5K awards ceremony will take place about 7:40 p.m., and the 10K awards at 8 (which is when the course officially closes).

Cash awards are up for grabs to the fastest runners in each race. The 10K will give $200 each to the fastest overall male and female runners, $150 each to second place, and $100 each for third place. The 5K will reward the top three: $100 each for first, $50 each for second, and $25 each for third.

Both races will also reward the fastest male and female in masters and grandmasters categories with $25 each. Additional awards will be given three deep by sex and age group, and everyone who completes the 10K will receive a medal.

Online registration is available until 11:59 p.m. Thursday. The 5K costs $30 and the 10K is $45. Race-day registration will be an extra $5.

The deadline for guaranteeing an event T-shirt has passed, but shirts will be available while supplies last.

Race-day packet pickup, registration and bag check will be at the starting line from 3 to 6:15 p.m. (Packets will not be available earlier.)

The auditorium lot will be blocked on the day of the race. Drivers can park on four adjacent lots on East Washington Avenue and one a block over on East Monroe Avenue. There will be signs on race day, and there is a parking map on the website.
