CUBS

Strop injures knee

CHICAGO -- Chicago Cubs reliever Pedro Strop will be sidelined four to six weeks with a torn meniscus in his left knee.

The right-hander will undergo arthroscopic surgery today after getting hurt fielding a grounder in the eighth inning of Wednesday's victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

"It's never fun not having him around, but it could have been worse," Cubs Manager Joe Maddon said Thursday.

Strop was placed on the 15-day disabled list and right-hander Justin Grimm was recalled from Class AAA Iowa. With reliever Hector Rondon also sidelined with a triceps injury, the NL Central-leading Cubs will have to shuffle bullpen roles ahead of closer Aroldis Chapman.

"It will give more opportunity to different guys, particularly Joe Smith is going to be the guy that is utilized more because of it," Maddon said. "Grimm has his strongpoints, too, that we can utilize. We're still waiting to hear from Hector to see exactly when he's going to be available."

Strop, 31, has a 2.89 ERA in 50 appearances this season.

ROCKIES

Rookie matches record

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Colorado Rockies rookie David Dahl has matched a modern-day major league record with a hit in each of his first 17 career games.

Dahl had a single in the first inning Thursday at Texas. It was the outfielder's 17th game since the Rockies promoted him from the minors July 25.

Chuck Aleno began his major league career with a 17-game hitting streak in 1941 for the Cincinnati Reds.

On Wednesday night, Dahl matched Juan Pierre as the only Colorado rookies to have hits in each of their first 16 career games.

The Rockies, citing the Elias Sports Bureau, said Dahl's career-opening 17-game hitting streak is the longest by any current active player.
