Man dead after shooting in McDonald County

PINEVILLE, Mo. -- A man fatally shot the person who assaulted him Wednesday night in rural McDonald County, a news release stated.

A call at 11:15 p.m. Wednesday sent McDonald County Sheriff's Office deputies to 286 Chestnut Lane, which is on Missouri Highway E, less than half a mile north of the Arkansas line. It's just north of the intersection of Arkansas 340 and 94.

Gavin Luke Meredith, 34, told deputies he shot a man who had come to the home and assaulted him, according to the release from prosecutor Bill Dobbs.

Deputies found Bobby G. Sullivan, 37, dead in a hall of Meredith's mobile home. A home address for Sullivan isn't known, Dobbs said.

Witnesses, who corroborated Meredith's statements, said Sullivan assaulted Meredith in the yard of the home. They said Meredith ran into his home, got a rifle, warned Sullivan to leave -- and fired a warning shot, the release states.

While in the home, Meredith sent two children into a rear bedroom for their safety.

Meredith and witnesses said Sullivan entered the home and, after being warned to leave, was shot once by Meredith.

Sullivan died at the scene.

Dobbs reported no charges have been filed. A decision on charges will be made after investigation into the shooting is complete, Dobbs said.
