ASU falls to Troy at Sun Belt championships

Arkansas State's Oscar Schlenkrich beat Troy's Cam Norman 2 up in the semifinal of the match play portion of the Sun Belt Conference championships Wednesday, but no other ASU player managed a victory in a 4-1 loss to Troy.

Jared Bettcher beat ASU's Joel Wendin 2 up, Calum Masters beat Andrew Huseman 1 up, and Luke Moser and Clay Vannoy beat Seth Garner and Tanner Napier, respectively, 3 and 1, at Raven Golf Club in Sandestin, Fla.

ASU earned a bid into match play after finishing third as a team in the three-round stroke play Sunday through Tuesday.

"We've worked hard all year, and this tournament is no exception," ASU Coach Mike Hagen said. "We played well and had great effort again this week. We prepared the right way and did a lot of good things."

Troy advanced to the final, where it beat Georgia State, 3-2. Bettcher, Moser and Vannoy each won matches to clinch the victory for the Trojans.

HSU men win GAC title

Henderson State senior Brice Howard shot a final round 6-under-par 66 to earn medalist honors and help the Henderson State men win the Great American Conference championship at the Hot Springs Country Club on Tuesday.

Howard finished with a 54-hole total of 204 and won the tournament by 12 strokes.

Arkansas Tech finished runner-up at 874, led by Austin Smith's 214 and Dylan Lovell's 216. The Wonder Boys held off Southeastern Oklahoma's 878, charging with a 7-under 281 in the final round.

The Arkansas Tech Golden Suns took the women's title for the second consecutive year at 916, besting Henderson by 11 shots. They also had the medalist in Pia Nunbhakdi, beating Southwestern Oklahoma's Elin Wahlin in a one-hole playoff with a par on the par-3 15th of the Park Course.

Nunbhakdi forced the playoff with a final-round 1-under 71. The Golden Suns also got the tournament's low round of 70 from Anna Frandsen, leading to a final-day 292.

Eoff named All-Big Ten

Purdue's Austin Eoff, a junior from Benton, was named to his third consecutive All-Big Ten team Tuesday.

Eoff was named to the first team for the first time and led the Boilermakers in stroke average (71.72), top-10 (7) and top-20 (8) finishes. He was named the Big Ten and Golfweek National Golfer of the Week in late October after winning the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate after shooting a 13-under par 203, the third-best 54-hole score ever at Purdue.

Eoff, the 2015 Arkansas State Golf Association champion, is now one of five players to be named to at least three All-Big Ten teams. He is Purdue's first first-team honoree since Adam Schenk in 2013.

Wilhoit helps lead SIU to title

Freshman Peyton Wilhoit of Searcy finished fifth individually to help lead Southern Illinois University to its first Missouri Valley Conference championship Tuesday, as the Salukis defeated eight-time defending conference champion Wichita State by 10 strokes.

Wilhoit, the Arkansas State Golf Association Junior Player of the Year in 2013, shot an 8-over 219 in the three-day tournament. He led after the second round, only to finish fifth.

Wilhoit was named All-MVC for his performance.

SOCCER

LR Rangers' conference opener postponed

The Little Rock Rangers' National Premier Soccer League opener Saturday at Dallas City FC has been postponed.

The match, originally scheduled to be played at Mountain View Soccer Complex in Dallas, has been rescheduled for July 2.

Little Rock, which went 1-0-1 last weekend against Memphis City FC in two friendly matches, will play in a friendly Sunday at Shreveport before returning to War Memorial Stadium on May 6 against FC Wichita.
