Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel was indicted by a grand jury Tuesday on misdemeanor charges stemming from a domestic violence complaint by his ex-girlfriend. The 2012 Heisman Trophy winner and Texas A&M star was accused by ex-girlfriend Colleen Crowley of hitting her and threatening to kill her during a night out on Jan. 30. Crowley said in court documents that Manziel struck her so hard that she temporarily lost hearing in one ear. The indictment accuses Manziel of striking Crowley and "forcing (her) into a vehicle and against a vehicle dashboard." Manziel faces a charge of misdemeanor assault related to family violence, which carries up to one year in jail and a $4,000 fine. Dallas police referred the case to a grand jury in February, asking the Dallas County district attorney's office to present the misdemeanor assault case. Manziel was cut by the Browns in March after two tumultuous seasons marked by inconsistent play and off-the-field headlines about his partying and drinking, including one stint in rehab. His future in the NFL is uncertain at best, and might be nonexistent without a second stint in treatment that two agents have demanded. The league also has tougher standards regarding domestic violence cases after revising its policy in August 2014 following the Ray Rice case, which could complicate any attempt by Manziel to return to the league.

• The Florida Gators and Miami Hurricanes will renew their dormant rivalry series, facing off in the Camping World Kickoff at Camping World Stadium in 2019. After months of speculation, Camping World CEO Marcus Lemonis announced an agreement Tuesday between the schools, Florida Citrus Sports and ESPN. Camping World is the new corporate sponsor for the Orlando Citrus Bowl and the series of kickoff games. Florida and Miami will be part of a four-game kickoff series hosted by the Central Florida venue. Florida State and Ole Miss will open 2016 season on Monday, Sept. 5, with a nationally televised primetime showdown in Orlando. The series will also feature a game between Alabama and Louisville in 2018. The 2017 matchup has not been set yet. Florida and Miami have met 55 times, with the first meeting coming in 1938. Miami holds a slight advantage -- 29-26 -- in the series, winning seven of the previous eight meetings. The Hurricanes most recently claimed a 21-16 victory over the Gators in 2013. It will be the seventh game between the two schools played at a neutral site and the second meeting between the two programs in Orlando. Back in 1976, Florida pulled out a 19-10 victory over the Hurricanes.

Nowitzki not retiring

Dirk Nowitzki isn't retiring, and the 7-foot German is all but certain that he will spend a 19th season with the Mavericks. The Dallas star said Tuesday it was "pretty much" crazy talk for Coach Rick Carlisle to suggest after a first-round elimination in Oklahoma City that Nowitzki might consider playing elsewhere. He led the Mavericks in scoring again a season after someone else did it for the first time in 15 years. The Mavericks have not won a playoff series since taking the franchise's first title in 2011. But Nowitzki said he still believes the team can contend. Dallas now has to decide what a balky right knee means for the future of versatile young forward Chandler Parsons, who wants to return.

• The Washington Wizards announced Tuesday the hiring of Scott Brooks as their new head coach, replacing Randy Wittman. Brooks reached a five-year agreement with the team last week. He will be introduced at a news conference today. As coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Brooks went 338-207 in seven seasons and helped develop Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook into perennial All-Stars. He led the Thunder to the NBA Finals in 2012. Washington General Manager Ernie Grunfeld was looking for a strong defensive coach, and Brooks brings that, as well as a relationship with Durant, who will be a free agent this summer. Brooks inherits a roster that includes star guards John Wall and Bradley Beal. Washington missed the playoffs this season after making it to the second round last year.

MLS in Detroit?

Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores and Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert are teaming up to try to bring a Major League Soccer team to downtown Detroit. MLS Commissioner Don Garber will be in Detroit today for meetings with the potential ownership group, and a news conference is scheduled for later in the day. Garber recently said Detroit was a candidate to get a team. Gores and Gilbert, both of whom graduated from Michigan State, said in a joint statement: "Detroit is rising and we know firsthand the power of sports to lift a community and drive a civic renaissance. We are very excited about the prospect of bringing Major League Soccer to Detroit and building an ownership group that represents a cross-section of investors."

Sanchez retires

Two-time Olympic 400-meter hurdles gold medalist Felix Sanchez has announced his retirement at the age 38 and will not compete in the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro. Sanchez was born in the United States but his parents were Dominican and he decided to compete in the Olympics for the Dominican Republic. He won 43 consecutive 400-meter hurdles races between 2001 and 2004. He took home gold medals in the 2004 Olympics in Athens and the 2012 games in London. He announced his retirement Tuesday in a video press conference. "My son was born just a few months ago and he needs me in these moments," Sanchez said. The hurdler known as "Super Sanchez" said that he will be an announcer with ESPN during the Rio games.

Warriors’ Kerr named Coach of the Year

OAKLAND, Calif. — Steve Kerr is the NBA Coach of the Year, after leading to the Golden State Warriors to the best regular season record in league history.

Complications from two back surgeries had sidelined him for the defending champions’ record start, then Kerr found his way into the huddle again on Jan. 22 after a nearly four-month leave of absence. And on Tuesday, he earned Coach of the Year honors for his Warriors’ record 73-win season that topped the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls team he played for that went 72-10.

“There were moments I didn’t know if I would get back at all this season,” Kerr said as Golden State prepared for Wednesday’s playoff Game 5 against Houston. “I’m really thankful I improved to the point where I could coach. Coaching has actually helped considerably as I’ve continued to heal. I sort of had to just take a leap of faith. If I was going to wait until I felt great I would have been waiting all season.”

Kerr received 64 first-place votes from the panel of 130 media members who regularly cover the league. Portland’s Terry Stotts was second in relatively close voting. San Antonio’s Gregg Popovich was third.

Kerr missed the Warriors’ first 43 games this season while recovering from back surgeries, with the team being operated in his absence by assistant coach Luke Walton, who led Golden State to a 24-0 start and 39-4 mark. Voters took notice of Walton’s work as well; he finished tied for eighth in the balloting.
