Baseball: King, Wildcats hold off Fayetteville

SPRINGDALE -- Springdale Har-Ber used a key double play and the pitching of Michael King to down Fayetteville on Tuesday.

King threw 6 2/3 innings and Blake Adams hit a double and two-run single to lead Har-Ber to a 6-3 victory over the Bulldogs at Arvest Ballpark. Har-Ber's win followed a disappointing loss Monday when Fayetteville scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to top the Wildcats, 2-1.

Fayetteville scored three runs in the top of the seventh and had the bases loaded when reliever Fuller Chandler got Robbie Briggs to hit into a forceout at third base to end the game.

"Michael pitched out of trouble every inning," Har-Ber coach Ron Bradley said. "He didn't have his best stuff, but he found a way to get out of it. We would've liked for him to finish, but he was out of gas and Fuller came in and threw strikes."

Fayetteville (17-10, 8-4) was in position to take an early lead Tuesday when the Bulldogs loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the first inning. King struck out Braden Jordan and Har-Ber got out of the jam when Barrett Banister grounded into a double play.

Har-Ber (17-10, 9-3) then seized control when Adams hit a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the first. Adams, Chris Pardun, and Caleb Grace added doubles for the Wildcats, who outhit Fayetteville 8-7.

"We scored two runs with two outs in the first and that was a huge, emotional turnaround," Bradley said. "Then we were able to build on it because you can never have enough against Fayetteville."

Har-Ber added three runs in the fifth inning to take a 6-0 lead. Remi Self and Tyler Blackston had run-scoring singles and Fayetteville contributed two errors, including a dropped throw at third base during a rundown.

Har-Ber and Springdale will play Saturday at noon at Arvest Ballpark and Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the Tyson Complex in Springdale. The teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday but that was changed because Har-Ber has its prom on Saturday night.

Bentonville 5, Rogers High 4

Nathan Lyons provided Bentonville with a game-winning hit for the second time in as many weeks as his seventh-inning single drove in Bryce Davis and pushed the Tigers past Rogers.

Davis entered the game as a courtesy runner for Matt Bratspies, who led off the seventh with a double to left. Lyons then belted a 2-0 pitch into center and allowed Davis to score.

Bentonville (16-7, 9-3 7A-West) needed a solo home run by Carter Brown in the fifth and a three-run rally in the sixth to force a tie. Tyler Johnson had an RBI double, while Dalton Herrera drove in a run with a squeeze bunt and Justin Hines tied with a sacrifice fly.

Rogers (18-7, 7-5) took a 1-0 lead in the first on back-to-back doubles by Harrison Heffley and Bradon Mabry, then the Mounties added three more in the fourth. Jackson Field drove in a run with a fielder's choice, followed by an RBI double by Kyle Eason and a run-scoring single by Max Horton.

Jacob Williams, who relieved starting pitcher Drew Young in the seventh, picked up the victory.

Rogers Heritage 3, Fort Smith Northside 2

Ethan Gates laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to score the game-winning run in the top of the seventh to help the War Eagles rally for the second straight day over the Grizzlies on Tuesday in 7A-West Conference action.

Northside (3-24, 0-12 7A-West) scored two unearned runs in the first, but Heritage (10-14, 4-8) got an RBI single from Logan Easley, then scored twice in the seventh to win it.

Kaleb Gavin's one-out RBI single tied the game 2-2. Gates then laid down the squeeze bunt to take the 3-2 lad.

That was plenty for Dylan Qualls, who tossed the complete-game one-hitter. He struck out five and walked two.
