Man injured after officer-involved shooting in Fayetteville

A Fayetteville police officer shot and wounded a man early Saturday morning after a struggle inside a vehicle, according to a news release.

Willie Tillman, 33, of Marianna was shot in the abdomen, leg and chest after trying to flee during a traffic stop on College Avenue. He was transported to a local hospital and was being treated for his injuries, the release said.

The injuries are potentially life-threatening, said Sgt. Craig Stout, Fayetteville police spokesman.

The two officers involved in the incident, Cpl. Patrick Hanby and officer Brandon Jones, have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation by the Washington County Sheriff's Office, the release said.

The release did not specify which officer shot Tillman.

Tillman was stopped for driving a Chrysler 200 without headlights about 2:25 a.m. After being asked to step outside the vehicle, Tillman dove back inside and tried to drive away. Both officers entered the vehicle with Tillman and used their stun guns, according to the release.

The vehicle rolled a short distance, and one officer was able to exit the vehicle. Tillman and the other officer continued to struggle inside the vehicle as it moved north on College Avenue. The officer shot Tillman during the struggle and Tillman was pulled from the vehicle at 380 E. Sunbridge Drive. Officers rendered aid until paramedics arrived, the release said.

Pope County Circuit Court records show a warrant had been issued March 9 for Tillman for possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, simultaneous possession of firearms by certain persons and simultaneous possession of drugs and firearms.

Tillman had been issued a warrant Oct. 13, 2015, out of Washington County for possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, according to county court records.

The release said Tillman also was wanted by the Arkansas Department of Community Correction for violating parole.
