Cardinals hold home-run fest in rout of Padres

CARDINALS 11, PADRES 2

SAN DIEGO -- Rookie Aledmys Diaz had his first five-hit game, Jedd Gyorko and Jeremy Hazelbaker hit three-run home runs and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Diego Padres 11-2 on Saturday night.

Diaz had a two-run double in the ninth, while Gyorko homered off his old team and Hazelbaker snapped an 0-for-17 slump. Gyorko and Stephen Piscotty each had three hits, and Piscotty hit a solo homer in the sixth.

Gyorko and Hazelbaker homered off Carlos Villanueva, who pitched for the Cardinals last year before signing with the Padres as a free agent.

Michael Wacha (2-0) and three relievers combined on a four-hitter.

Gyorko, traded to the Cardinals for outfielder Jon Jay on Dec. 8, reached the second deck in left field with a 436-foot shot, his third, with one out in the eighth.

Hazelbaker homered to right-center with one out in the seventh to snap a 2-2 tie.

Kevin Quackenbush (1-1) allowed two runs and one hit in 1 1/3 innings for the loss. He allowed a walk and a single in the seventh before Brad Hand came on and allowed pinch-hitter Matt Carpenter's pinch-hit, RBI single. Villanueva then allowed Hazelbaker's home run.

Wacha allowed 2 runs and 4 hits in 6 innings, walked 4 and struck out none.

REDS 13, CUBS 5 Eugenio Suarez and Adam Duvall hit three-run home runs in the sixth inning as the Cincinnati Reds finally broke through against the Cubs' dominant pitching and beat NL Central rival Chicago.

METS 8, BRAVES 2 David Wright hit a two-run double, Steven Matz earned his second consecutive victory and the New York Mets stayed hot by beating the power-deprived Atlanta Braves. Neil Walker and Asdrubal Cabrera hit back-to-back home runs in the ninth.

PHILLIES 10, BREWERS 6 Maikel Franco hit his third home run in two days, Odubel Herrera homered and reached base five times, and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Milwaukee Brewers. Franco hit a go-ahead, three-run home run in the fourth inning off Chase Anderson (1-2).

DODGERS 4, ROCKIES 1 Kenta Maeda held Colorado hitless into the sixth inning, A.J. Ellis lined a two-run home run and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Rockies. Maeda (3-0) allowed 3 hits -- all in the sixth -- no runs and struck out 8 in 6 1/3 innings as the right-hander from Japan lowered his ERA to 0.36.

DIAMONDBACKS 7, PIRATES 1 Chris Herrmann drove in four runs with a home run and double, Rubby De La Rosa gave up three hits over six-plus innings, and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Pittsburgh Pirates.

GIANTS 7, MARLINS 2 Jake Peavy pitched seven innings for his first victory and added a two-run single off Miami ace Jose Fernandez, and the San Francisco Giants beat the Marlins.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

YANKEES 3, RAYS 2 Brett Gardner hit a solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the New York Yankees a 3-2 victory over Tampa Bay on Saturday, spoiling the impressive major league debut of Rays top pitching prospect Blake Snell. The slim left-hander permitted 1 run and 2 hits in 5 innings, striking out 6 and walking 1.

ORIOLES 8, ROYALS 3 Chris Davis homered and had four hits, Manny Machado extended his hitting streak to 16 games and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Kansas City Royals. Mark Trumbo had three hits and four RBI for the Orioles, and Tyler Wilson (1-0) won his first start this season.

BLUE JAYS 9, ATHLETICS 3 Troy Tulowitzki hit two solo home runs, Josh Donaldson added a three-run blast as Toronto snapped Oakland's six-game winning streak. J.A. Happ (3-0) allowed 3 runs and 7 hits in 7 innings to win his third consecutive start.

INDIANS 10, TIGERS 1 Corey Kluber struck out 10 over eight innings, Yan Gomes hit a home run and drove in five runs, and Cleveland routed Detroit. Kluber (1-3), the 2014 AL Cy Young Award winner who went 9-16 last year, gave up 2 hits and no walks in 8 innings.

WHITE SOX 4, RANGERS 3 (11) Slump-ridden Jose Abreu hit an RBI single with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning, leading Chicago over Texas. After Texas tied it in the ninth on Elvis Andrus' sacrifice fly off David Robertson, the White Sox went on to win for the fourth time in five games.

ASTROS 8, RED SOX 3 Colby Rasmus hit a tie-breaking grand slam in the fifth inning to lead Houston over Boston that snapped a four-game skid. Rasmus drove in a fifth run with a double in Houston's three-run eighth for his most RBI since he had six on June 2, 2011.

ANGELS 4, MARINERS 2 Mike Trout drove in the tying and go-ahead runs with a home run against Felix Hernandez, Cliff Pennington also homered, and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Seattle Mariners.

INTERLEAGUE

NATIONALS 2, TWINS 0 Tanner Roark struck out a career-high 15 and allowed 2 hits over 7 innings in a dominating performance that carried Washington past Minnesota. Roark and three relievers combined to strike out 18, the most by Washington since its arrival from Montreal in 2005.
