Trike Theatre to host camps

Trike Theatre will offer “Camp Creative” from 8 a.m.to 2:30 p.m. Monday through May 6 at the theater, 209 N.E. Second St. in Bentonville. The camp will be for children from kindergarten through fourth grade, exploring creativity and imagination through creation of plays, building props, designing cardboard cities, choreographing movement and imaginary adventures. The cost for the camp is $40 per day.

There also will be summer camps and productions for students from pre-kindergarten to 18 years old beginning in June.

The theater is hosting an ice cream soiree from 5 to 7 p.m. May 12. The cost is $10 per person; members are admitted free.

Spaghetti dinner

Saturday

The Wedington Volunteer Fire Department’s 30th spaghetti dinner fundraiser will be 5-8 p.m. Saturday at the fire department, Arkansas 16 West, five miles from Interstate 49. Adults are $6 and ages 6 to 12 are $2.

Bergman

presents lecture

Kai-Uwe Bergmann will present a lecture at 1 p.m. Friday in Ken and Linda Sue Shollmier Hall, room 250 of Vol Walker Hall, on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville, as part of the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design lecture series.

Bergmann is a partner at Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG). This group of architects, designers, builders and thinkers operates within the fields of architecture, urbanism, research and development.

In his lecture titled “Hot to Cold,” Bergmann will take the audience through the scorching heat of the Arabian Desert to the unforgiving chill of the Finnish tundra, on a journey across the globe to explore the forces that shape cities and buildings.

This is the ZweigWhite Leadership in Design Lecture.

Weekend

retreat slated

Fire Om Earth Retreat Center will offer an Herbs and Botanical Weekend Retreat on Friday through May 1 at the retreat center, 872 Mill Hollow Road in Eureka Springs.

Facilitators Steven Foster, Larry Lowman, Melissa Clare, Amrit Knaus and Dyman Moraga will host the five available workshops.

Writers’ Colony offers fellowship

A two-week residency is being offered by the Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow for writers with children younger than 18 living with them. Thanks to a grant from the Sustainable Arts Foundation, this fellowship is designed to support parents who are also writers.

The fellowship entitles the recipient to a two-week stay at the Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow in Eureka Springs. Each resident has a private suite with wireless Internet. The residency provides uninterrupted writing time, with a European gourmet dinner prepared five nights a week. My Time includes the two-week residency and provides a stipend of $1,500.

My Time is not limited to a specific genre. Writers can work in poetry, memoir, fiction, nonfiction or young adult. Include in the application package information about participant’s family and how this fellowship will help progress them as a writer. No more than one page.

Deadline for applications is June 1 and the residency can be used up until June 1, 2017. Fellows may elect to stay additional time at the rate of $525 a week. Fellowship applications must be accompanied by a nonrefundable $35 application fee.

New School offers freshmen preview

The New School in Fayetteville is adding a high school, beginning this August with its first ninthgrade class. Upper School Preview Night will be 5-6 p.m. Thursday in the J.B. and Johnelle Hunt Family Auditorium and is designed to share information on the new ninth-grade program for parents, students and the community. The event is free and open to the public.

Families will hear detailed information about the future of the upper school program and be able to visit with Dennis Chapman, president and head of school, Phil Schwartz, head of upper school and academic dean, and Marshall Gray, newly appointed director of college counseling. Also available will be Amber Moore, head of middle school, who will share how the middle school program will prepare students for the school’s innovative upper school experience. A new academic building — with science labs, gymnasium and innovation center totaling more than 65,000 square feet — will be ready for students beginning August 2017. A 3D interactive view of the new facilities will be presented by architect firm Hight Jackson Associates.

Free class offered

The Little Switzerland Amateur Radio Club will sponsor a Federal Communications Commission Ham Radio Technician class from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 7 and 14 at the Mercy Hospital Day Room, 214 Carter St.in Berryville. Participants must attend both days to receive all the material.

Tests for technician, general and extra class licenses will be given at 6 p.m. May 14.

Everyone is welcome. Walk-ins for all tests are invited; there is a charge of $15 for each individuals taking the tests.

A light lunch will be furnished by the club.

Arts Council recruiting artists

The Arkansas Arts Council is accepting applications from teaching artists who would like to join the Arts in Education Artist Roster program. Performing, literary or visual artists who are interested in working with teachers and students in schools or after-school/ summer programs are encouraged to apply.

The Arts in Education program Artist Roster is an online list of artists who are available for participation in the Arts in Education residency program. The AIE program places professional artists in Arkansas schools and nonprofit community organizations to work directly with teachers and students, to demonstrate their art forms and share their ideas, creativity and talents.

A professional spoken word artist, playwright and author, Chris James of North Little Rock has been on the Arts in Education Artist Roster since 2009. He has worked with hundreds of students in Arkansas through his poetry and stage play residencies with schools and arts organizations.
