I-49 lanes to close for barrier removal

Work on Interstate 49 in Johnson and Springdale will require overnight lane closures for three nights beginning Tuesday, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said.

Crews removing temporary concrete barriers along I-49 between the Johnson Mill Boulevard interchange and the Don Tyson Parkway overpass will require the northbound and southbound lanes to be alternately reduced to one lane between U.S. 412 and just south of Johnson Mill Boulevard through Friday morning.

The northbound lane closures will occur between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. and the southbound lane closures will take place between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m., all weather permitting.

Traffic will be controlled using signage and barrels, the department said.

The work is part of a $28.3 million project to widen I-49 to six lanes from U.S. 71B in Johnson to U.S. 412 in Springdale. The project is anticipated to be complete later this year, the department said.
