College Avenue streetwork to move south Monday

FAYETTEVILLE -- The next segment of a nine month sidewalk improvement project on downtown College Avenue will begin Monday, the city announced Friday.

The overall project will bring 10-foot sidewalks with lighting and trees, replace curbs and gutters and bury some power lines on the east side of the street on a stretch between North and Maple streets. The work began at North Street in March and will continue Monday between East Baxter Lane and East Prospect Street.

North traffic on College will be restricted to one lane generally between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. on weekdays and "an occasional Saturday," according to a city release. The city urged drivers to be cautious in the area and consider taking different routes.

The whole job is expected to end around November and cost about $1 million split evenly between the city and the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department. College is also designated U.S. 71B. City officials have said the work could include putting in a pedestrian crosswalk near East Rebecca Street, but only with the Highway Department's approval.
