School-chief firing prompts LR rally

A rally in support of the Little Rock School District and its superintendent, Baker Kurrus, is planned for noon Saturday in front of the state Capitol.

The event, being organized by groups such as the Arkansas Public Policy Panel and the Little Rock Education Association, comes after state Education Commissioner Johnny Key notified Kurrus earlier this month that Kurrus' contract will not be extended beyond its June 30 expiration date.

Key has named Michael Poore, who submitted his resignation Monday as Bentonville School District superintendent, to be Kurrus' successor. The Little Rock district has been operating under state control -- with a state-appointed superintendent and no locally elected school board -- since Jan. 28, 2015, because six of its 48 schools are labeled by the state as academically distressed.
