De'Kota Despain and Keaton Taylor, both 16, are accused of killing Douglas Harwell after a bullet from Despain's .380-caliber pistol hit Harwell in the back while Harwell was sitting in a chair outside his home, according to a probable cause affidavit.

The teens, who are being charged as adults, will likely be charged with capital murder, aggravated residential burglary, aggravated robbery and theft of property of more than $25,000, prosecuting attorney David Butler said.

Despain, who appeared in court Monday, is being held without bail at the Columbia County jail. Taylor was being extradited from Louisiana and was expected to arrive Wednesday afternoon. He will appear in court today.

The affidavit said Despain told police he shot Harwell in the head after the gun went off, and the two boys dragged him into the house. Later that night, Despain went back to the house and stole several guns, a watch and a cellphone.

In a second interview with police, Despain changed his story and said he and Taylor each fired one shot, according to the affidavit.
