The American Red Cross serving Northwest Arkansas will celebrate their work and laud exceptional volunteers at the annual Celebration of Heroes benefit May 5 at the John Q. Hammons Center in Rogers. Traditionally held as a dinner, organizers changed the event to a breakfast gathering this year.

Susan and Mike Moore, executive vice president and president of Supercenters -- Walmart U.S., are serving as the benefit's honorary chairmen. Moore's hometown is Joplin, Mo., and he saw first-hand the difference the Red Cross made after the May 2011 EF-5 tornado that devastated much of the city.

The nonprofit organization provides services in the areas of disaster relief, health and safety, international relief, volunteers, youth and armed forces.

Brigette Williams, Arkansas Red Cross regional communications officer, said, "An Arkansas Hero is selected for the selfless effort to save a life or to prevent additional harm to an individual, in line with the mission of the American Red Cross -- to be prepared to prevent and to respond to emergencies with health and safety training (i.e. rirst aid, CPR, AED) or situational awareness.

"A Hero can be of any age or walk of life. The Hero cannot be involved in causing the need for others to be saved from harm."
