Arkansas and Springdale School District are national leaders in computer science, U.S. Secretary of Education John B. King Jr. said Friday during a 90-minute visit at Springdale High School.

President Barack Obama has asked Congress for $4 billion over the next three years in this 2017 budget proposal for a Computer Science for All initiative intended to help states expand access to computer science education. As King talks to federal lawmakers about the president’s proposal, he plans to share what he learned the students, parents and educators in Springdale. They share examples of the ways computer science can inspire students not only in high school, but in getting them to think about future studies in college and careers, King said.

“I will point to what I heard here today about the ways in which computer science can be a central part of a well-rounded education for students,” King said.

King also will share the thoughtfulness of the Springdale School District in making sure teachers have training and support for teaching computer science, he said.
