SPRINGDALE -- Blake Young has the college decision out of the way, so now he can fully concentrate on the goals he has set for himself.

The Fayetteville senior wants the school record in the shot put, and he's getting closer to it. He broke his personal-best again Thursday with a winning toss of 54 feet, 2.5 inches during the Joe Roberts Invitational at Har-Ber High School.

"We've been putting in a lot of work during practice," said Young, who signed a track national letter of intent Wednesday with Harvard. "I have some goals that I have in mind, and I'm trying to break the school record and get a 58. That's what I'm progressing toward."

Young beat his previous best, which was done last week at the Bulldog Relays, by 2 inches. He later became a double-winner when he took the discus, but his throw of 156-7.5 was off the mark of last week's throw that surpassed 161 feet.

He feels the record is within reach. He said he's thrown a few in the 57-58 feet category, and now it's a matter of doing it when it counts.

"Hopefully, I'm looking to start spinning in the shot," Young said. "It's just a matter of getting with people there marking it. I think it's just a mental game. Before, I hit 56 in warmups, but it's just a case of not throwing far enough."

Young wasn't the only one to break through some personal barriers during the meet. Rogers High's Tony Roller did it twice when he won the high jump with a personal-best performance of 6-5, then he broke the 40-second barrier in the 300-meter hurdles with a winning time of 39.95 seconds.

Meanwhile, Springdale Har-Ber senior T.J. Sugg, who signed his national letter of intent Wednesday with Baylor, became the state's first runner this year to break the 2-minute mark in the 800. His time was 1:59.70, and he was pushed by Bentonville's Zerai Belai, who had a time of 2:00.06.

"That feels good to hear," Sugg said. "I'm probably not where I want to be right now, just because I'm coming off an injury to my knee. I'm trying to get my way back, working hard and doubling up on some workouts.

"It helped to have that Bentonville guy come up on my side on the back stretch. It spurred me to get moving, but it can be unnerving at times."

Bentonville's girls and Har-Ber's boys came away with the team titles. The Lady Tigers, whose 4x800 relay team of Katy Kotoucek, Merrill Leak, Victoria Mitchell and Sophie Quandt improved their state-best time again to 9:36.48, came away with 162 points to 104 for second-place Rogers.

On the boys side, Har-Ber began the day with its 4x800 team of Brett Borchert, Ethan Carney, Hayes Harris and Matthew Wentz had a state-best time of 8:15.05, finished the meet with 140 points, followed by Fayetteville with 128 and Bentonville with 113.
