FAYETTEVILLE -- The wind had died down and most athletes at the Bulldog Relays had already called it a night when Zach McWhorter still had heights he wanted to clear.

Nathan Hall, Bentonville hurdler, competes in the boys 110-meter hurdles Friday during the Fayetteville Bulldog Relays track meet at Ramay Junior High.

The Springdale Har-Ber junior smashed the meet record in the pole vault when he cleared 16 feet, 11 inches on his first try during Friday's meet. The previous mark was 15-8 set by Bentonville's Ethan Sandusky in 2010.

"It was exciting," McWhorter said. "I also did the 110 hurdles, so I've been waiting awhile because it's one of the first events. I'm happy with today. I'm just going to keep on working on that 17-1 barrier, and next year the goal is 18 feet."

Friday's performance is the latest of new heights for McWhorter, who is trying to match his personal-best of 17-2 he cleared indoors in February. He cleared 16-1 to break the Tiger Relays record last month, and he cleared 16-5 last weekend during the Texas Relays.

He attributed his improvements on work he had done during the offseason as well as a switch in the poles he used. He tried three times to clear 17-3 but couldn't get the bar to stay in place.

"I've been using bigger poles," he said. "In the offseason, I've been doing some strength training and speed work, trying to work the top better.

"I just moved up a pole, popped up and cleared it. I was pretty excited. I was just out of gas at 17-3."

A total of six meet records were broken with Fayetteville doing most of the damage. Caleb Cooper turned in the state's best performance in the triple jump so far this season when he leaped 46-8.5 and broke the previous mark of 44-6 by Bentonville's DeMarcus Murphy in 2011, while Blake Young had a toss of 161-5.25 in the discus and broke the previous meet record of 161-2.

Meanwhile, Jasmine Franklin broke the meet's oldest record with her toss of 41-11.25, breaking the previous mark of 41.8.25 set in 1986. Fayetteville's 4x400-meter relay of team Rebecca Boushelle, Jazmyn Chenault, Jameisha Jones and Janeisha Jones set a meet record with its time of 4 minutes, 2.85 seconds -- breaking the previous mark of 4:05.97 set by Bentonville in 2011.

"It's always nice to do well in your home meet," said Fayetteville coach Drew Yoakum. "We had a lot of kids in these events, and it's great for them to do well in front of the home crowd.

"You look at all the records, and they're great feats. The one I take pride in is our 4x4 team. The girls are coming out of basketball, and Pink and Blue (Jones) really did well. We also had a lot of the distance kids pre-qualify for the state meet."

The sixth meet record wound up being a tie in the girls pole vault record as both Bentonville's Isabel Neal and Greenwood's Bailee McCorkle both cleared 11-8. Neal, however, was credited for the win in that event for having less misses.

Fayetteville also swept both teams title, and the girls did it in impressive fashion with 205 points to 118 for second-place Bentonville. Fayetteville's boys took their title with 153.5 points, followed by Har-Ber with 131 and Bentonville with 114.
