Baseball: Rogers High completes sweep of Springdale

ROGERS -- Jackson Field drove in a pair of runs, and freshman McKayden Templeton pitched a complete game as Rogers High shut out Springdale High on Tuesday to complete a 7A-West Conference sweep at Veterans Park.

Field was 3 for 3 and doubled twice -- the last one a rocket that missed being a home run by inches -- to highlight the Mounties' eight-hit attack.

Rogers (13-2, 5-1 7A-West) had to rally for five runs in the seventh inning on Monday to claim a 10-8 win at Springdale. On Tuesday, the right-handed Templeton needed just the one run Rogers scored in the first inning to earn the win.

"Today with the wind blowing in, one run felt like three and five felt like 1o," Rogers coach Matt Melson said. "McKayden just kept the ball down in the zone."

Templeton pitched to contact, getting 10 ground-ball outs and just two strikeouts in a 91-pitch effort. He worked out of a couple of jams, the last in the sixth inning when Springdale (11-7, 2-4) had two runners on and Templeton got Bulldogs catcher Ben Roach to chase a high pitch out of the strike zone for a strikeout.

"I was able to locate my fastball which set up my slider," Templeton said. "I was able to throw it on both sides of the plate."

The top of the Mounties' order combined for six hits with lead-off batter Grayson Lee going 3 for 4 and Jay Young adding two hits. Both scored a pair of runs, and Field drove in Bradon Mabry twice from first base with RBI doubles. Field's double in the third inning highlighted a three-run inning that opened the floodgates.

Springdale coach Shohn Doty said the emotional carry-over from Monday's heartbreaking loss was evident.

"Our effort today wasn't very good," Doty said. "That's something that I think we'll get better at. You're going to have some tough losses. We had one yesterday that we really needed to bounce back from. We didn't show that ability today."

Springdale Har-Ber 5, Rogers Heritage 3

Adam Scoggins hit a two-run double in the sixth inning to break a tie to lead Har-Ber to a sweep of Rogers Heritage.

The War Eagles kept the game close after losing 13-1 to Har-Ber (9-6, 4-2 7A-West) on Monday. Scoggins had two doubles in the game while Blake Adams and Brady Patrick added a double apiece for the Wildcats. Garrett Carmical went 3 for 4 to lead Heritage (6-8, 2-4).

Michael King struck out eight in seven innings to earn the victory.

Har-Ber led 3-0 before Heritage tied it with three runs in the top of the sixth.

Bentonville 8, Fort Smith Southside 0

Drew Young and Jacob Williams combined for four-hit shutout, while Matt Bratspies and Nathan Lyons each drove in two runs in Bentonville's victory over Southside in Fort Smith.

Young pitched six innings to pick up the win and preserved the shutout by pitching out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth. He allowed all four hits while striking out six and walking two before Williams pitched the seventh and allowed a walk.

Bentonville (9-6, 4-2) scored in the third when Lyons reached on an error and scored on a single by Bratspies. Lyons drove in a run with a fourth-inning single, then the Tigers blew the game open with four runs in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Fayetteville 11, Fort Smith Northside 5

Braden Jordan went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, Barrett Banister added two RBIs and Hayes Cox was 2 for 3 as the Purple Bulldogs completed the two-game sweep with a Tuesday win at Fort Smith Northside.

The Grizzlies (2-14, 0-6) threatened and were within 6-5 before a five-run sixth inning for Fayetteville (10-8, 3-3). Cox helped closed out Northside with three scoreless innings of relief, allowing just three hits with two strikeouts.
