Prep track: Fayetteville's Holmes states case for hurdles

BENTONVILLE -- Fayetteville girls track coach Drew Yoakum simply wants to find Lauren Holmes six events she can do and let her claim her share of points.

The junior made a strong case for one event Friday when she claimed the 100-meter hurdles during the second Border Clash at the Tiger Athletic Complex. Holmes had a slightly wind-aided time of 15.64 seconds, good for the third-best performance in the state this spring.

"Just coming in, we wanted to work Lauren on the hurdles," Yoakum said. "We didn't put her in hurdles last year until the very, very end, and she's been very good in the hurdles in the past. Even with the wind today, I think she got a good start, and hopefully she has good things coming her way."

Holmes also won the triple jump with a leap of 35 feet, 8.5 inches and teamed with Jurnee Britt, Jazmyn Chenault and Deshundra Morgan to help Fayetteville win the 4x100 relay in 51.12 seconds. That helped her score 20 points and tie for high point honors with teammate Jasmine Franklin, who won the shot put (42 feet) and the discus (112-7).

It also helped the four Arkansas girls teams get state bragging rights from their Oklahoma and Missouri colleagues. Team Arkansas -- consisting of Bentonville, Fayetteville, Rogers High and Springdale Har-Ber -- had 384 combined points to Team Oklahoma's 284 and Team Missouri's 186.

"First of all, this whole event is really good," Bentonville coach Randy Ramaker said. "The more we do these things and they like to come here, the more it will grow. It's a chance to cheer Arkansas because of the different format. It's certainly fun and certainly enjoyable."

Bentonville, which won the regular girls team title by a 169-127 margin over second-place Fayetteville, got off to a hot start in chilly conditions. The Lady Tigers' 4x800 team of Merrill Leak, Victoria Mitchell, Trinity Walker and Katy Kotoucek had a winning time of 9 minutes, 45.19 seconds -- a slightly better time than the Class 7A state meet record of 9:45.81 set by Bentonville in 2007.

On the boys side, Owasso and Edmond North provided a solid one-two punch and gave Team Oklahoma a 377-287.5 decision over second-place Team Arkansas while Team Missouri compiled 190.5 points. Owasso took the regular team title with 147 points, followed by Edmond North with 125 and Bentonville with 105.

Fayetteville's Blake Young took the high point honor with 20 points with victories in the shot put (52-1) and the discus (154-7).
