Jail inmate found unresponsive dies

A Phillips County jail inmate held on first-degree murder charges died Tuesday, prison officials said.

The death is being investigated by the Arkansas State Police as a possible suicide.

Haward Tate, 25, was found in distress in his cell at the East Arkansas Regional Unit in Brickeys at about 10 a.m. Tuesday, Arkansas Department of Correction spokesman Cathy Frye said Wednesday.

At the time, Tate was unresponsive but breathing. The jail's medical staff performed CPR until a doctor and ambulance arrived.

Tate was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:11 a.m., Frye said.

Tate had been held at the facility since March 16. Phillips County leases space at the prison unit, Frye said.
