Memphis knocks off Bowling Green

MEMPHIS 44, BOWLING GREEN 41

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Paxton Lynch threw two long touchdown passes in the second half and Jake Elliot kicked a 29-yard field goal with 7:35 left as Memphis spoiled Bowling Green's home opener Saturday, 44-41.

The loss ended a string of six consecutive victories in home openers by Bowling Green (1-2).

Lynch completed 29 of 40 passes for 386 yards and threw touchdowns to three different receivers for Memphis (3-0).

Tied at 34 after three quarters, Matt Johnson gave Bowling Green the lead on a 62-yard, Matt Johnson-to-Roger Lewis touchdown pass to open the fourth.

Lynch responded with a 48-yard scoring pass to Tevin Jones that tied the game at 41-41 with more than 11 minutes left, and Elliott kicked the game-winning field goal with 7:35 remaining.

Johnson was 28 of 44 for 443 yards and 4 touchdowns, three of them to Lewis, who finished with seven receptions for 261 yards.

Jackson, Parks lead Rice

DENTON, Texas -- Driphus Jackson completed 29 of 39 passes for 373 yards and 3 touchdowns and Dennis Parks caught 8 passes for 163 yards and 2 TDs to help lead Rice defeat North Texas 38-24 on Saturday.

Jowan Davis finished with 102 yards rushing and Samuel Stewart added 48 yards with a touchdown.

Rice (2-1, 1-0 Conference USA) trailed 3-0 after one quarter but scored 38 of the game's next 45 points to take a 38-10 lead late in the third quarter.

North Texas made a late push in the fourth, scoring on A.J. Ezzard's 5-yard run and a 93-yard pass from Andrew McNulty to Carlos Harris.

McNulty finished with 303 yards and two touchdowns passing and Harris had 193 yards and two TDs receiving to lead North Texas (0-2, 0-1 Conference USA).

The teams combined for 1,040 yards of offense.

Navy swamps E. Carolina

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy's record-setting quarterback Keenan Reynolds ran for five touchdowns and 142 yards as the Midshipmen dominated East Carolina in their American Athletic Conference debut with a 45-21 victory Saturday

Reynolds already owns the record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback with 70 and is now fourth overall for the most by any player.

Reynolds has scored three touchdowns or more in 13 games--the most in NCAA history. His five rushing touchdowns is also an American Athletic Conference record.

East Carolina (1-2, 0-1 AAC) had held seven of its past 15 opponents to less than 100 rushing yards. Navy (2-0, 1-0 AAC) had 415 on the ground. Fullback Chris Swain went over 100 yards for the second consecutive game, finishing with 123 on a career-high 29 carries and a touchdown.

Pirates quarterback Blake Kemp completed 36 of 49 passes for 325 yards and 3 touchdowns and Isaiah Jones caught 10 passes for 130 yards.

In other games involving AAC teams, Jon Croft Hollingsworth’s school-record 55-yard field goal propelled Furman to a stunning 16-15 victory over Central Florida. … Tanner Lee threw for 277 yards and a touchdown to lead Tulane past Maine 38-7.

South Alabama hangs on

SAN DIEGO — Xavier Johnson ran for a career-high 142 yards and two touchdowns, including the winner in overtime, to help South Alabama (2-1) beat San Diego State (1-2) 34-27.

Cody Clements finished with 270 yards passing and two touchdowns and Gerald Everett had eight receptions for 164 yards — both career highs — and a score for South Alabama.
