Voters decide millage questions

FORT SMITH -- Voters in three western Arkansas counties voted on millage questions in Tuesday's annual school election.

Voters in Clarksville were asked to approve a 7.9-mill increase to finance a proposed $28.48 capital improvement project that included construction of a new high school and gymnasium, two new tornado shelters and demolition of the old field house.

With eight of eight precincts reporting, the complete but unofficial vote was 705 for the tax 705 and 1,179 against.

In Franklin County, Ozark School District asked for a 5.5-mill increase to raise nearly $17 million for construction of a new junior high school, a 500-seat auditorium and expansion of the cafeteria to serve the junior and senior high schools.

With three of three precincts reporting, the complete but unofficial vote was 619 for the tax, 478 against.

Charleston school officials asked voters to approve the issuance of $9.17 million in bonds for improvements to district buildings and property. The district was not asking to increase the 12.5 mill debt service levy but to extend it by 12 years to payoff the new bonds. The school district's total tax levy is 37.5 mills.

With three of three precincts reporting, the complete but unofficial vote was 170 for the tax, 39 against.

In Sebastian County, voters in the old Hartford School District, which merged with the Hackett School District, went to the polls to reduce the Hartford district's tax levy by 1.3 mills for a total of 13 mills for debt service. The 13 debt service mills for the Hackett School District did not change.

The incomplete and unofficial vote Tuesday was 135 for the tax, 49 against.
