More development approved for Rogers' Pleasant Crossing

ROGERS -- The Planning Commission approved another development for the Pleasant Crossing area during a regular meeting Tuesday.

Thomas Hennelly, Crafton Tull project manager, presented a 14,000-square-foot retail building on Pleasant Grove Road. He said it will sit between Academy Sports and Walmart.

The project was approved about six years ago, Hennelly said. He said the permit expired on the development. He said it needed a new approval from the commission.

Hennelly said the developer hasn't revealed what business will be in the building. He said construction on the site could start in upcoming weeks.

Another 18,000-square-foot building was approved for the region by the Planning Commission in June. The building will house a liquor store and another 12,000 square feet will be rented.

The Planning Commission approved six retail buildings at Pleasant Crossing in February. One of the buildings will be a Burlington Coat Factory. Derrel Smith, Rogers senior planner, said work has started on the buildings.

Smith said an apartment complex also is planned for the area.

A Whataburger opened in the area recently. Cavender's Western Outfitter opened earlier this summer along with a shopping center that houses a mattress retailer, fitness center and nail salon.

Businesses first started developing the area in about 2003. Walmart was the first business built in the area. It sits near the intersection of West Pleasant Grove Road and South Pleasant Crossing Boulevard.

A few other businesses followed, but development came to a halt when the recession hit, Smith said.

Daniel Ellis, vice president of Crafton Tull, represented developers of the six buildings approved by the commission. He said the parking lot the buildings will use was constructed in 2004. The rest of the land sat undeveloped after the market collapsed.

Smith said there are still multiple commercial lots available in in the Pleasant Crossing area. He said it's likely development will continue for the area.
