Hot Springs holds off Mena

HOT SPRINGS -- Backup quarterback Korey Wasson scored from a yard out with six seconds left, lifting Hot Springs to a 14-7 victory over Mena on Friday night at Reese Memorial Stadium.

Hot Springs (2-0) went 60 yards in 12 plays on the final drive, coming back from a 7-0 halftime deficit by limiting Mena (0-2) to 7 second-half yards. Wasson kept the drive alive by scrambling 17 yards from his holder spot on fourth-and-5 from the 19-yard line.

"That's two weeks in a row where I thought we were in better shape than the other team," Hot Springs Coach Chris Vereen said. "I felt like we were in better shape than Lake Hamilton and better shape in the end against Mena. We've really worked hard on it and it's won us two ballgames."

Cleo Floyd scored Hot Springs' first touchdown with 4:18 left in the third quarter, cutting back for a 17-yard touchdown run. Floyd finished with 184 yards on 36 carries.

Hot Springs had another scoring opportunity near the end of the third quarter, gambling on fourth down in its own territory, but Mena held.

Floyd then bailed out the Trojans with an interception on the Hot Springs 5-yard line, and the Bearcats never threatened again.

Mena committed fewer mistakes in the first half, subsequently holding a 7-0 lead at the break. After stopping Hot Springs' opening drive on downs at the Mena 23-yard line, the Bearcats caught a break when the Trojans dropped a potential interception on their second play from scrimmage.

On the next play, Mena quarterback Carson Cannon set up a screen pass to Justin Dean, who weaved from the left sideline all the way to the right for a 67-yard touchdown with 4:18 left in the opening quarter.

Both sides had their share of mistakes the rest of the half, starting with Hot Springs throwing an interception to Dean. Mena then drove into Trojan territory before Michael Kelly sacked Cannon to end a drive.

Mena led 7-0 at halftime despite Hot Springs holding a 185-157 edge in total offense.
